There is a high risk of overdose from drugs in the Swift Current area, according to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health, after multiple overdoses were reported on Thursday.
Naloxone was administered in multiple cases on May 21, with “varied results,” according to a notice from the ministry.
Drugs in the area, described as a purple chunk or rock that is swallowed, could contain cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl or other unknown substances.

“Individuals experienced sudden onset of decreased levels of consciousness and slow or shallow breathing,” the notice from the ministry reported. “All reported cases required medical intervention.”
The drug in question was purchased as MDMA, also known as ecstasy, the ministry noted, but said drug screening of the drug was negative for MDMA. Instead, the sample tested positive for cocaine and methamphetamine.
“Presence of fentanyl or other substance is suspected, but unconfirmed,” the alert stated.
The ministry said this drug puts those consuming it at a high risk of overdose.
The overdose alert will remain in effect for Swift Current until May 28.
High-risk overdose alerts were also issued in April for Regina and Saskatoon, shortly after the closure of Prairie Harm Reduction.
