City of Saskatoon urges caution when celebrating Victoria Day with fireworks

Victoria Day is often celebrated with a bang, but the City of Saskatoon wants to make sure it doesn’t end with a whimper.

With many people planning to mark the holiday on Monday with fireworks, the city is sharing some tips to help everyone do so safely.

According to the city, low-hazard fireworks like Roman candles, sparklers, fountains, wheels, volcanoes, mines and snakes can be launched on private property from dusk until 11 p.m.

The city advised everyone lighting fireworks to use plenty of caution and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

“Familiarize yourself with the space requirements for the type of firework being discharged. Requirements vary depending on the firework type,” the city said in a statement.

“Ensure your location is free of overhead obstructions, is clear side-to-side and is a safe distance from combustible materials.”

Anyone lighting off fireworks should be aware of the wind direction, the city added, and ensure spectators are positioned in a safe place.

Fuses should always be lit at the tip, the city added, and a firework that doesn’t go off should never be re-lit.

“Have a supply of water available and use it to extinguish debris or smouldering embers before they cause injuries, property damage and/or fires,” the city said.

“Keep in mind that you are solely responsible for any debris that may land on spectators or another’s property.”
