For many Saskatchewan moms, the perfect Mother’s Day gift was not something wrapped in a box, but time spent with family.
At Wascana Park, moms and grandmothers reflected on what the day meant to them, with many saying flowers and gifts were nice, but the memories mattered more.

Sheryl Doig said she was already getting the Mother’s Day she wanted.
“Well for me, I’m doing it. I’m with my kids and my best friends,” Doig said. “What else could you want?”
Keeley Butz said her ideal Mother’s Day was simple: a relaxing day with family. She said the weekend was made even better with a surprise.
“My daughter surprised me last night. She’s from Saskatoon, so it’s kind of a nice surprise,” Butz said. “So I’ll get to be with both my kids this weekend.”
Eloise Ireland said she would have loved to spend the day with all three of her daughters, but two live in Calgary and one lives in Ontario. Still, she said she had recently been able to visit them.
“I did spend the last few weeks in Ontario and in Calgary,” Ireland said. “I just got back from Calgary, so I had time to be with them, and they treated me royally.”
When asked what kind of gift they wanted, the answer came back to family again.
“I don’t really need a gift,” Butz said.
Ireland agreed. “Just time with my family and grandkids,” she said.

For first-time mom Estelle Pessemier, this Mother’s Day came with a brand-new title.
She said every day with her baby was already special, but the holiday gave her a new appreciation for the work mothers do.
“Before being a mom, I didn’t realize how much work it would be to have a little one,” Pessemier said. “I am really impressed with all the moms I see with several kids.”
Pessemier said she recently met a mother of six at the pool.
“I just don’t know how she does it,” she said.
While some moms said they wanted time with children and grandchildren, Pessemier had a slightly different wish for her first Mother’s Day.
“My perfect gift would be a full night of sleep,” she said. “Honestly, I don’t need anything. Just a bit of time for myself and a good night of sleep would be wonderful.”
Pessemier also said new moms should not feel guilty about accepting help.
“Try to take time for yourself and accept help,” she said. “When people offer, just accept it.”
Ireland said the day was also a chance to recognize the people who make mothers feel appreciated.
“Just to all the dads and men out there that treat their wives and their mothers special, I think that’s great,” she said.
