CHARLOTTETOWN — Prince Edward Island’s transportation minister has resigned from cabinet to avoid breaking conflict of interest rules.
The government says in a news release Sidney MacEwen wasn’t able to comply with the rules within a timeline set by the province’s conflict of interest commissioner.
Cabinet ministers are required to place certain assets in a blind trust under the province’s Conflict of Interest Act.
The government says those rules create a conflict for licensed fishers who are required to be out on the water with their boats when fishing.
The Progressive Conservative government says it’s working on amendments to change the legislation that it says locks out an entire sector from serving in cabinet.
The government says MacEwan will remain a member of the legislature for the Morell-Donagh riding.
MacEwan is the second minister to leave cabinet because of conflict of interest rules in the past two months.
Premier Rob Lantz booted Gilles Arsenault from the economy development portfolio in March and suspended him from caucus over a perceived conflict of interest after Arsenault approved an altered redevelopment plan for a Summerside golf course.
