“Investigation determined a male was sitting in a parked vehicle outside a business in Kelliher. A second male approached the vehicle, pointed a firearm at the victim, threatened him, and entered the vehicle,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“The suspect ordered the victim to drive. The victim complied, later parking near a residence on George Gordon First Nation.”
While the vehicle was parked, the RCMP said a man and woman approached the vehicle in an attempt to help the victim. Police said a fight ensued, during which the alleged kidnapper broke one of the vehicle’s windows and sprayed bear mace towards the two good Samaritans.
“Punnichy RCMP responded and arrested the male at the scene on George Gordon First Nation,” the RCMP said.
Police said all three victims were assessed for non-life-threatening injuries by paramedics at the scene, while the alleged perpetrator was taken to hospital for assessment.
“During the arrest and a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers located and seized a sawed-off firearm, ammunition, two cans of bear mace, a machete, a baton, approximately 36 grams of methamphetamine, approximately 24 grams of fentanyl, and approximately 6 grams of psilocybin,” the RCMP noted.
Police said the 31-year-old man is now facing a list of charges including kidnapping with a firearm, forcible confinement, pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon and assault.
The RCMP said he made a court appearance on Tuesday in Punnichy.
The case follows a similar incident which took place on March 12 in Tisdale, when a 44-year-old allegedly stole a car at gunpoint, briefly kidnapping the two minors who were inside.
“The male drove around the Tisdale area, forcing the youth to remain inside the vehicle,” the RCMP said. “Approximately two hours later, the male let both youth out of the vehicle near Tisdale. No injuries were reported.”
Police said officers spotted the stolen vehicle on 101st Avenue in Tisdale shortly after getting the initial report, and arrested the alleged kidnapper.
