A meat processing company is facing a hefty fine in relation to a workplace injury involving a rifle, which dates back to 2023.
According to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, Valley Meat Processors pleaded guilty to one violation of the province’s occupational health and safety regulations in Rosthern Provincial Court on March 11. The company admitted to failing to provide information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to protect the health and safety of workers, resulting in a serious injury.

One additional charge was withdrawn, the ministry noted.
The ministry said the charges stemmed from an incident on Dec. 28, 2023, when a worker in the Gruenthal area “was seriously injured while handling a rifle which discharged.”
As a result of the guilty plea, the company was fined $28,571.43, along with a victim fine surcharge of $11,428.57, for a total amount of $40,000.
