Hoar frost on a transmission line is being cited as the likely cause of the power outage in Saskatoon Wednesday morning, as well as a “flash” witnesses reported seeing around the time the power went out.
The power outage affected more than 14,000 customers, according to the city.
A service alert on the city’s website listed the reason for the outage as “adverse weather.”

Commenting further in an email, the City of Saskatoon said Saskatoon Light and Power is attributing the cause to a “localized pocket of dense fog that left heavy frost on the transmission line near 33rd Street and Circle Drive,” which “caused the system to trip as designed.”
Witnesses described seeing a “flash” of light around the time the power went out in homes, businesses and at traffic lights in Saskatoon.
“The flash people would have seen relates to the hoar frost on our transmission line,” the city explained in another email. “The arcing of the electricity caused by the frost would have made that flash.”
The city said there is no infrastructure damage.
Areas impacted by the outage included Montgomery, Mount Royal, Caswell Hill, City Park and North Industrial.
According to the outage map on the Saskatoon Light and Power website, the power has been restored in those areas to the total 13,775 customers impacted.
The City of Saskatoon directed customers can watch for situation updates on the outage map and the city’s service alerts page.
