Warman head coach and general manager Brett Pilkington in the third period the Palmarin’s feet got tangled with another’s on the backcheck, causing him to lose his balance and go head-first into the boards.
“The player was on the ice. Our medical went on the ice and identified a potential neck (injury) and the back was sore and so we waited for EMT to arrive on scene and then get the player off the ice from there,” Pilkington said.
On March 1, Warman posted an update indicating the player had been released from hospital and was recovering at home.
Pilkington wouldn’t disclose how serious the injury was but said it was not a spinal injury.
While it was a scary incident, Pilkington said it’s a play that can happen in any game.
“I’ve been at this for a bunch of years. You don’t like to see it but it does happen throughout the game. It does take you through a full mindset of emotions but, being a past player myself, it does happen in a game and you just hope best for the player and his family,” he said.
For the players on the ice, Pilkington said he asked the group if they wanted to continue at the time.
“They wanted to play for the player so we continued on. The life was out of the building for sure and it was out of both teams but we were able to finish the game,” Pilkington said. The Klippers had a 5-1 win.
The Wolverines are next in action on March 10 against the Humboldt Broncos.
