Saskatchewan’s largest school division has a new director of education.
Saskatoon Public Schools announced on Friday that Charlene Scrimshaw, one of the division’s deputy directors, will take over the director of education role starting on Aug. 1.
Scrimshaw’s entire career has been spent with Saskatoon Public Schools, where she previously worked as a teacher, administrator and superintendent.

Scrimshaw, who is originally from Big River, also sits on the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation’s board, and is the president of the board for Persephone Theatre, the school division noted.
“Charlene is a respected and visionary leader who brings deep experience, integrity, and a genuine commitment to students and families,” division board chair Kim Stranden said in a statement.
“Her collaborative approach, strong relationships across our system, and unwavering focus on student success make her exceptionally well suited to serve as the next director of education.”
Scrimshaw is taking over for outgoing director of education Shane Skjerven, who is set to retire at the end of July after spending six years in the role and 25 years working with Saskatoon Public Schools.
“Scrimshaw is recognized as a strong advocate for arts in education, along with nature-based and other unique programming that provides students with meaningful and inspiring experiences,” the school division said in a statement.
“In her various roles with the division, she has demonstrated a strong and ongoing commitment to Indigenous students and families, grounded in respect, relationship-building, and a belief in the importance of culturally responsive education.”
The division also noted Scrimshaw’s “strong and unwavering” commitment to the division’s 3,300 staff members, adding that she believes the entire organization works best when staff members are heard, empowered and supported.
Saskatoon Public Schools has a total enrolment of nearly 29,000 students across 48 elementary schools and 10 high schools.
