For the second season in a row, University of Saskatchewan Huskies guard Gage Grassick is standing head and shoulders above the rest of the conference.
On Thursday, Grassick was named Canada West women’s basketball player of the year after another standout season on the court for the Huskies. In her senior year, the Prince Albert product averaged 15.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.5 steals per game, leading the Huskies in each category.

It’s a repeat of the award for Grassick, who also took home U Sports women’s basketball player of the year honours in 2024-25 after leading the Huskies to their third national championship.
Grassick is just the second player in the program’s history to win Canada West player of the year in back-to-back seasons, joining star Sarah Crooks who accomplished the same feat in 2006 and 2007.
Huskies head coach Lisa Thomaidis also earned some recognition at the conference on Thursday, as she was named Canada West women’s basketball coach of the year after leading the team to a perfect 20-0 regular season.
It’s the third consecutive season Thomaidis has taken the conference’s top coaching award, marking the eighth time she’s won it during her 27-year career with the Huskies.
The awards come amid a waiting game for the Huskies. The team was upset 61-58 by the University of Calgary Dinos in Canada West semi-finals last weekend, handing Saskatchewan its first loss of the 2025-26 season.
Knocked out of playoffs, the Huskies have one final avenue to keep their season alive with a selection committee determining one at-large wildcard berth for U Sports nationals in Québec City.
The Huskies were riding a 51-game winning streak dating back to November of 2024 before Saturday’s semi-final loss to Calgary, and the Huskies sat atop the country in several categories, including win percentage.
According to the Huskies, a decision on the at-large berth is expected to be made on Sunday following the conclusion of conference championship games.
