Two-time Special Olympics gold medal winner Taylor Barth and NCAA Track and Field Championships record breaker Savannah Sutherland were named the male and female athletes of the year at the 41st annual Saskatchewan Sport Awards in Regina on Thursday.
Barth and Sutherland received their awards at the Queensbury Convention Centre.

Six people received excellence awards, while nine individuals were honoured in either the coach dedication, volunteer dedication or inspire through sport categories.
While representing Canada at the Special Olympics World Winter Games, Barth topped the podium in the M08 intermediate giant slalom and the M06 intermediate slalom race, and also finished fourth in the M01 intermediate super G event.
Borden’s Sutherland broke four records, including a Canadian national record, in the women’s 400-metre hurdles event at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. It was the ninth-fastest time ever recorded in the event.
World Para Swimming Championships gold medal winner Ali Diehl was named the female youth athlete of the year, while three-time international bronze medal winner Kash Tarasoff won in the male youth athlete of the year award.
Deihl, the youngest member of Team Canada at the World Para Swimming Championships, placed fourth place in the women’s SB9 100-metre breaststroke event, setting a personal best in the process.
She was named Swimming Canada’s breakout swimmer of the year in the Paralympic program because of her performance.
Tarasoff made the senior national team while still a junior diver and won three international bronze medals. He was one of the youngest divers to compete at the senior level events.
Regina’s Team Bryden took home the team of the year award after going undefeated at the Senior Men’s World Curling Championships.
“The championship title extended Canada’s dominant history in the event, marking another gold in a tradition of success at the championship,” Sask Sport said in a statement.
For the fourth time in five years, Mary Carroll was named coach of the year. She guided numerous diving athletes across senior and junior levels to medal at various events.
The Dive Sask. Provincial Team and target shooter Anshul Malik received the inspire through sport award. The dive team was rewarded for using its training camp in Cuba to complete humanitarian work, while Malik showed resilience by continuing in his sport after immigrating to Canada,
The volunteer dedication awards recognized Darin Degenstein, Dave Elder and Allyson Senecal for their commitments to supporting ringette, athletics and figure skating.
Melissa Lock (Handball), Mark Lord (Soccer), David Wassill (Adaptive waterski) and Harvey Weber (Athletics) each received coach dedication awards for their 10-plus years of giving back in their sports, as well as for their guidance and impact across various areas of the amateur sport community.
