The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) said on Friday it is supporting an investigation into the death of a patient at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital after an incident involving SHA Protective Services Officers.
In a news release on Jan. 9, the SHA said the officers were called to a patient room in the morning after staff reported a safety concern involving an admitted patient.

It said that a “physical altercation” then occurred between the patient and the officers, and the patient became unresponsive. Medical staff responded but pronounced the patient dead.
The SHA said it is taking the incident “extremely seriously,” and is “committed to accountability and to ensuring a safe care environment for patients, visitors, and staff.”
The authority said it immediately notified Saskatoon Police Service, which is investigating. The SHA said it is fully cooperating with the police investigation and has deemed the death a “Critical Incident,” which initiates a legislated process for review and reporting, including a formal internal review.
The SHA said it is also co-ordinating with Saskatoon Tribal Council to provide support to the patient’s family and loved ones, as well as providing support to staff members impacted by the death.
No further information was available on Friday, the SHA said, adding that additional updates would be provided “when appropriate.”
