After a fatal shooting last week, Big Island Lake Cree Nation band manager Geoffrey Sandfly says they need help from authorities to curb violence, drug use, gang activity and domestic abuse within the community.
Saskatchewan RCMP is continuing to search for the suspects involved in the Dec. 30, 2025 shooting, and are asking witnesses to come forward with any information related to the incident.

According to police, a 31-year-old man was found dead and three others were injured on the First Nation northwest of Meadow Lake.
Sandfly said a meeting is scheduled for Wednesday with multiple organizations including the RCMP, Turtle Island Private Investigators, and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) to ask for assistance.
“We also have a few people in our community who are causing havoc on social media and it’s not helping the situation but creating chaos and division and anger,” he said.
“Our nation has a lot going on but we are continuing to monitor and assess the situation daily.”
Sandfly said the RCMP’s crime reduction unit, and Saskatchewan Marshals Service had been helpful in assisting the community but said “they can’t stay here forever.”
On the morning of Dec. 30 police were called to Big Island Lake Cree Nation, and a dangerous person alert was issued asking residents to stay indoors. Police said two armed men were last seen riding an ATV in the community.
Police cancelled the alert the same day stating they no longer believed there was a threat to public safety.
On Jan. 2 police were called to the First Nation again over reported gunshots. According to the RCMP, investigators have not determined whether the incidents are connected.
