The former principal of a private Christian school will serve a six-month conditional sentence for assaulting a former student with a wooden paddle.
On Thursday at Saskatoon’s Court of King’s Bench, Duff Arthur Friesen was placed under several court-ordered conditions, including a prohibition on working or volunteering in any position of trust or authority involving anyone under the age of 16.

Friesen is also required to participate in any assessment, counselling or rehabilitation programs as directed by the court.
The former principal’s trial began in May, and he was found guilty on one of four charges of assault with a weapon for an incident during his tenure at the school between 2003 and 2004.
The school was formerly known as Christian Centre Academy and has since been renamed as Valour Academy.
A publication ban prevents the media from reporting any evidence, submissions, exhibits and victim-impact statements presented during the trial. It protects another upcoming trial for Friesen, who is facing similar charges in September 2026.
Earlier this month, former director of the private Christian school John Olubobokun was given a five-month conditional sentence to be served on top of an 18-month conditional sentence for also paddling students who once attended the school.
