A 16-year-old-girl has pleaded guilty to attempted murder for splashing a fellow student with liquid and setting her on fire at Evan Hardy Collegiate.
On Monday at Saskatoon’s Court of King’s Bench, the teen also pleaded guilty to unlawfully causing bodily harm to a teacher who intervened to help the victim during the attack on Sept. 5 2024.

A black canister with liquid was poured onto the victim’s head and was then lit on fire as flames spread over her body, according to a witness. The victim was taken to a hospital in Edmonton to recover.
At the time of the arrest, the accused was 14-years old and the victim was 15. Both cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
A judge-alone trial was set for May 4, 2026, to May 29, 2026, with the Crown intending to seek an adult sentence on the charges.
Earlier this spring, the Crown filed a direct indictment, eliminating the need for a preliminary inquiry, which determines if there is enough evidence for a case to proceed to trial.
Since the attack, a spokesperson for Saskatoon Public Schools said the division is committed to strengthening the safety of students and has commissioned an independent review of the incident.
The school division said it identified areas of improvement in the division’s violence threat risk assessment protocols, documentation, responses to traumatic events, and discipline procedures.
Additionally, school principals, vice principals and counsellors received training and new resources on violence risk assessments and incident documentation.
Sean Hayes, the teacher who was injured while intervening to help the victim, has assumed a new position at Tommy Douglas Collegiate.
Sentencing submissions are set for Feb. 26, 2026 at Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench.
