The Saskatchewan Roughriders finished atop the CFL West Division, allowing them an extra week to get healthier.
An extra week of rest appears to have helped a few players get back onto the field ahead of the CFL West Final.
Wide receiver Dohnte Meyers (ankle), offensive lineman Trevon Tate (chest) and defensive back Rolan Milligan Jr. (knee) were all back on the practice field on Tuesday. Milligan did leave practice early.
“It feels great. I had some time off, and now to be able to put the cleats back on and put the helmet on and jersey and be back out there with the guys, especially with us trying to 1-0 this week, so it feels good,” Meyers said.
Meyers has been out since Oct. 3 as he dealt with an ankle injury. He could help provide a boost to the Riders’ offence for the West Final at Mosaic Stadium against the B.C. Lions. Kickoff for the game is set for 5:30 p.m. The Green Zone pregame show begins at 3:30 p.m.
The second-year CFL receiver had 1,056 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games en route to being named a West Division All-CFLer. His teammate and roommate, KeeSean Johnson, also had a West Division All-CFL season, hauling in 86 catches for 1,159 yards and four touchdowns.
“To get that personal accolade, it’s cool but the regular season is over with. All those personal accolades are in the past,” Meyers said. “Me and him are just focused on going 1-0 this week and getting the job done.”
Tate has had a long road to get back on the field. The offensive lineman has been out since June 28, dealing with a torn pec that required surgery.
“It feels good for the coaches to come out and let me get limited reps and just be a part of it again. It’s a blessing and I am very thankful that they have that type of trust in me to give me that type of freedom to get better and practice with the team,” Tate said.
While it remains up in the air if Tate will play, he admits it would mean a lot to make it back for the playoffs.
“It would be a huge accomplishment but a testament to the teammates and coaches trusting me,” Tate said. “I put in the hard work but it’s not just my hard work that gets it done. It takes a village and a whole group of people to make sure one person to get back to it and feel like it should be.”
Riders head coach Corey Mace admitted that is one of the many decisions the coaching staff will need to make.
“As you guys can predict, there’s going to be some tough decisions and that’s going to be one,” Mace said.
Johnson (knee) didn’t practice on Tuesday but Mace was still optimistic about his availability.
“All the guys were trending in the right direction — even some of the guys who were out here today — being smart with,” Mace said. “KeeSean is going to be one of those guys who we are going to be looking at over the next couple of days. He has been running around and stuff like that so it’s good. We have everybody trending in the right spot.”
