A 27-year-old man from Creighton is facing charges after a passenger in his vehicle was killed when he allegedly crashed into a building during a police chase.
According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers got a report saying a woman had been assaulted at a home in Creighton just before 3 a.m. on Saturday.

“The female was reported to have been taken against her will in a vehicle by the adult male who was said to have a weapon,” the RCMP said in a statement.
Police said Mounties caught up with the vehicle in the Creighton area, but the driver fled from the officers, who used a tire-deflation device in an effort to end the chase. The vehicle drove over the device, the Mounties said, and continued for about a kilometre before hitting the building.
“When officers arrived at the scene of the collision, they observed the driver fleeing on foot,” the RCMP said. “Officers located a second adult male in the vehicle. He was seriously injured. Officers provided first aid until the arrival of EMS. He was transported to hospital and declared deceased.”
The man killed in the crash was a 20-year-old from Deschambault Lake, the RCMP said, and his family has been notified of the death.
“Investigators are working to determine his cause of death in consultation with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner,” the RCMP noted.
Police said the driver was found and arrested later on Saturday morning.
“Investigation determined the driver who fled from the collision was involved in the assault that occurred earlier in the evening,” police added. “The female victim from the assault that occurred earlier was safely located; she was not in the vehicle at the time of the collision.”
The 27-year-old Creighton man who was allegedly behind the wheel is now facing charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident causing death, flight from a peace officer and assault.
He’s expected to appear in court in La Ronge on Monday.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team, which is mandated to investigate all cases where a serious injury or death results from the actions of police, was notified of the incident, but the Mounties said the investigation will be conducted by the Saskatchewan RCMP under the watchdog agency’s oversight.
