TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:
Carney in Washington
Prime Minister Mark Carney will head to Washington this week to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. Carney is planning to travel to the U.S. capital on Monday before meeting with Trump on Tuesday. The two countries launched consultations last month ahead of the upcoming review of the trade agreement between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
Elevate
The annual Elevate tech conference will get underway Tuesday and run until Thursday in Toronto. Speakers include actor Simu Liu, Shopify Inc. president Harley Finkelstein, Dragon’s Den star Arlene Dickinson and executives from OpenAI, Cohere, Coinbase and TD Bank.
HBC
Hudson’s Bay is due back in court on Thursday for a hearing about the royal charter that established the retailer in 1670, when it was a fur trading business. Last week, a hearing was adjourned after the company said it had received a surprise bid for the document. It had planned to ask permission to auction off the charter after the Weston and Thomson families expressed interest in purchasing the artifact.
BRP plan
BRP Inc. will hold its 2025 investor and analyst day on Thursday when it will also present its new strategic plan that it’s calling Mission 28. The Ski-Doo and Sea-Doo maker delivered better-than-anticipated results earlier this year. In its full-year guidance, the company expects revenue between $8.2 billion and $8.3 billion, with normalized earnings per diluted share expected to come in between $4.25 and $4.75.
Jobs numbers
Statistics Canada will release its latest jobs report on Friday when it publishes its labour force survey for September. The Canadian economy lost 66,000 jobs in August as the unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 7.1 per cent.
