650 CKOM received two RTDNA Prairie region awards on Wednesday, winning in the categories for Best Radio Newscast and Continuing Coverage.
The newscast, written and delivered by Erin McNutt and Gerald Bauman, was aired in June of 2024, the morning after the Edmonton Oilers’ loss in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final. The broadcast also featured stories from the small Saskatchewan town where the team’s coach grew up, along with coverage of the clean-up after a tornado touched down in Carrot River.
The association recognized the collective efforts behind 650 CKOM’s six-month coverage of the inquests into the mass stabbing on the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon in 2022, which were led by senior reporter Lisa Schick.
The two awards will be entered for national consideration this November.
