RCMP officers provided first aid to the man but paramedics declared him dead at the scene. Police said his family has been notified. They did not provide the driver’s age.
Unity RCMP said that before the crash the detachment had received several reports about the vehicle, including that it was driving erratically.
The release said that officers attempted to stop it, but the vehicle was driven away at high speed.
Police also said that because of the interaction with police before the crash, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) was notified, but determined the incident was not within its mandate.
SIRT is a civilian-led, independent body that investigates incidents where a person has died or suffered serious injury arising from the actions of on and off-duty police officers, or while in the custody of police, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.
Unity RCMP continues to investigate, the release said.
