This season has been magical for the Berries, as the team is only in its second year of existence.
Saskatoon Berries president Steve Hildebrand credits everyone in the organization for helping get the club get within striking distance of the record.
“It’s been fantastic. As I say to everyone, you’re only as good as your people and … we’ve got great people with all of SEG (Sask Entertainment Group, owner of the Saskatoon Berries) and it’s been awesome.
“It’s great to see the community come together,” Hildebrand said. “Everyone has just done a great job with it and I’m super proud of what we’re building here.”
Hildebrand also credits head coach Joe Carnahan.
“He’s a massive part of our team, and (with) the connections he has and the relationships he has with the players, he does an unbelievable job.
“The players know exactly where he sits. They know where they stand within our lineup and what they need from him. He helps out so much. He’s such a smart baseball guy,” Hildebrand said.
“I love … watching batting practice and how he just works with the players and helps them with the little things. He’s been a huge part of it and he doesn’t get enough credit for how good a coach he is. He’s been great.”

If the Berries can’t secure the record on Friday, they have three more opportunities over the Saskatchewan Day long weekend — facing the Red Sox again at Cairns Field in Saskatoon on Saturday at 6 p.m., before taking on Medicine Hat Mavericks on Sunday and Monday at 1 p.m. in Saskatoon.
After the long weekend, the team’s attention will shift to the playoffs, which begin Aug. 6.
Hildebrand knows anything can happen in the playoffs.
“We found (that) out last year. No one gave us a shot against Medicine Hat. We took two in their ballpark,” Hildebrand said.
“We go three games against Moose Jaw and Game 3 was a battle where they came out on top. … I like where we’re at. I think we got our pitching staff set up. I know Joe will be have have our group ready to go.”
