A man is in hospital with serious injuries after Meadow Lake RCMP responded to a call on Flying Dust First Nation on Sunday. The incident ended with an officer shooting their gun.
It happened on June 29 around 5:30 p.m. When two officers arrived, they found a man described as having a weapon and “acting aggressively.”
No further details were released by RCMP other than to say an officer discharged their firearm, injuring the man. His family was notified, but there was no update on the man’s condition. No officers were injured during the incident.
Now the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has launched an investigation as is protocol with officer-involved shootings.
Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan RCMP General Investigation Section is investigating the circumstances of the initial call for service.
SIRT is a civilian-led, independent body that investigates incidents where a person has died or suffered serious injury arising from the actions of on and off-duty police officers, or while in the custody of police, as well as allegations of sexual assault or interpersonal violence involving police.
Final reports into SIRT investigations are issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
