Families visiting the Western Development Museum this summer can take advantage of a new national initiative that aims to make cultural spaces more accessible for young Canadians.
The WDM is now part of the Canada Strong Pass, a federal program running until Sept. 2 that gives free general admission to anyone under 18 and half price admissions to young adults at all four locations across the province.
“We’re genuinely excited to be part of this program,” said Kristy Rempel, director of community engagement at the WDM.
“It’s a fantastic initiative by the federal government and we think that will help bring our families and young people to all kinds of different cultural institutions right across both the great province of Saskatchewan and across Canada.”

The WDM has four locations in the province; in Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Yorkton and North Battleford, each one is now included under the Canada Strong Pass. No ID or registration is required to access the discount — the rate is applied automatically at the door.
Rempel said the pass supports both accessibility and education. “Even a young family potentially has quite a bit less of a bill when they attend. It just makes it that much easier when you know that anyone under 18 gets in free.”
She added the program is especially helpful during the summer months, when more young people visit museums outside of school programming.
“If you’re over at the lake and want to pop in around Moose Jaw or North Battleford, here’s a great opportunity and the kids are free. Come and see something new.”
One of the exhibits Rempel is most excited to showcase this summer is the Treaty Timeline Exhibit, created in partnership with the Office of the Treaty Commissioner. The exhibits showcases the history and evolution of treaties in Saskatchewan and explores the idea that “we are all treaty people.”

“It’s quite a fantastic exhibit,” Rempel said. “There’s even a video from the Government House that plays along with it.” The exhibit is currently rotating through the four WDM locations, with a permanent installations in development.
While general admission is included in the Canada Strong pass, Rempel clarified that certain programs, like summer camps or workshops, are not eligible for the discount.
With a full season ahead, Rempel says the WDM team is ready to welcome the larger crowds.
“We have fantastic staff at each of the museums and a lovely complement of volunteers. Most of the museum is self-guided, so I don’t see there being any issues. The more the merrier, we invite everybody to come out.”
