Police in Saskatoon seized an explosive device that was discovered inside a vehicle last week.
Officers were called to a compound on English Crescent just before 10 a.m. on Friday after getting a report that an explosive had been found inside a salvaged vehicle.

“Upon arrival, officers confirmed the device to be a commercial-grade explosive and advised businesses in the area to shelter-in-place,” the Saskatoon Police Service said in a statement.
“The Explosive Disposal Unit attended to the compound, secured the explosive, and seized it for destruction without incident.”
The shelter-in-place order was lifted a short time later, police said.
Man injured in stabbing on McPherson Avenue
Police were called to the 600 block of McPherson Avenue just after 4 a.m. on Saturday after getting a report of an injured man. The victim was found outside, “suffering from injuries including a serious stab wound.”
He was taken to hospital for treatment of the life-threatening injury, and police said the investigation indicated he may have been stabbed “in a nearby clearing on the riverbank.”
The assault is not believed to be random, police said.
Stabbing on Eighth Street East after group confronts thieves
Officers were called to the 2900 block of Eighth Street East at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday for a report of an injured person.
“Upon arrival, officers learned that a confrontation had occurred between two suspects and a group of persons that had observed them stealing property from a nearby yard,” police said in a statement.
“During the confrontation, a male victim received a non-life-threatening stab wound and was transported to hospital by paramedics. The suspects had fled the area prior to police arrival.”
The stabbing is under investigation by officers with the Serious Assault Unit, the police force noted.
Break-in and theft at mall
Police are investigating a break-in and theft at a mall on Eighth Street East.
Officers were called to the mall early on Sunday morning for a report of a break and enter. While police didn’t name the mall, the address corresponds with the Centre Mall.
“Upon arrival, officers learned that multiple masked suspects shattered a window on the mall and proceeded towards a business within where they broke several display cases and stole an undisclosed amount of merchandise; they fled in a vehicle minutes later,” police explained in a statement.
The case marks the mall’s second robbery this month.
According to police, two men carrying axes smashed display cases at a jewelry store inside the mall on June 4, and fled with stolen merchandise.
Imitation firearm incidents
Police in Saskatoon responded to three separate calls involving imitation firearms over the weekend, which are are often pellet or BB guns designed to resemble actual handguns.
In the first incident, police were called to Central Avenue and 115th Street on Saturday afternoon for a report of a man armed with a gun.
“Upon arrival, officers located two males matching the suspect descriptions,” police said.
“As officers were investigating, one of the males attempted to hide an imitation firearm in a bush; he was subsequently arrested without incident.”
The 17-year-old suspect is now facing charges of possession of a dangerous weapon, unauthorized carrying of a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm while prohibited and failure to comply with court-imposed conditions.
In the second case involving an imitation gun, police said officers on bicycles were patrolling the area around 23rd Street East when they spotted a commotion at a bus stop.
“Upon detaining multiple persons and continuing to investigate, it was determined that an imitation firearm had been discharged at one of the involved persons by another,” police said.
“Further investigation led to locating one of the detained persons in possession of an imitation firearm.”
As a result, an 18-year-old man was charged with discharging an imitation firearm with intent to cause bodily harm, possession of a dangerous weapon, unauthorized carrying of a concealed weapon, and failing to comply with court-imposed conditions.
The third case happened just before 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, when officers were called to a hotel on Circle Drive West after getting a report of an armed man.
Officers seized an imitation firearm from a 27-year-old man who was in the parking lot, police said. He’s now facing charges of possession of a dangerous weapon and unauthorized carrying of a concealed weapon.
Man mugged, assaulted
Police said a man was assaulted and robbed on Monday afternoon.
Officers were called to the 400 block of Fairmont Drive at around 3 p.m.
“Upon arrival, officers learned that a man had been walking in the area when he was approached by two unknown persons and assaulted; the suspects then stole his property and fled the area,” the Saskatoon Police Service said.
“Officers are continuing to investigate.”
Two bear spray incidents
Police were called to the 300 block of Avenue Q South just after 10 p.m. on Monday for a report that a boy had been bear sprayed.
“Upon arrival, officers learned that the victim had been bear sprayed by a group of youth in the alley; he was decontaminated by paramedics and released,” the police force said.
“The suspects fled the area prior to police arrival.”
In a separate incident just a few hours later, officers were called to Nelson Road for a report of an injured person at around 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
Police said the victim was a youth, who had been sprayed with the irritant.
“The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival and was not believed to be known to the victim,” police said. “The victim was decontaminated by paramedics and released.”
Police seize cash, cocaine, meth, fenanyl, handgun
Two men are facing a total of 28 charges after they were arrested in a drug- and gun-trafficking investigation last week.
According to police, officers with the Gangs and Guns Unit arrested two men, ages 36 and 58, on Betts Avenue on Friday.
Police later searched a vehicle and a home on Veltkamp Crescent in connection with the investigation, leading police to seize a loaded handgun, 518.34 grams of methamphetamine, 255.06 grams of cocaine, 111.51 grams of fentanyl, $3,800 in Canadian currency, a case of jewelry, a scale and cell phones.
