A 41-year-old man from the Sweetgrass First Nation is facing a charge of first-degree murder.
According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers got a report about a serious assault in a field east of Cut Knife, near Highway 40, at 2 a.m. on Saturday.

“Officers responded immediately and located an injured male, who was later pronounced deceased by EMS at the scene,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“He has been identified as 52-year-old Garnet Whitecalf from Sweetgrass First Nation. His family has been notified and victim services made available to them.”
At the scene, police arrested 41-year-old John Whitecalf. He’s now facing a murder charge, and made his first appearance in a North Battleford provincial courtroom on Monday.
The Sweetgrass First Nation is located west of North Battleford on Highway 40.
