A 23-year-old woman who was originally charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a child on the Shoal Lake Cree Nation is now facing a charge of second-degree murder.
According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, officers were called to a home on the Cree Nation about 100 kilometres east of Nipawin at around 7 p.m. on May 23 after getting a report that “a child under the age of 10 had been seriously injured.”

When they arrived, the Mounties said the officers found the child unresponsive. Despite receiving first aid, the child was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.
Police said the death was considered suspicious. The investigation was handed to Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes, and a woman was take into custody.
“The suspect and the child were known to each other,” the Mounties said in a statement. “Investigation has determined there to be no elevated risk to public safety in relation to this incident.”
In an update on Monday, the RCMP said a 23-year-old woman from Pakwaw Lake had been charged with manslaughter.
On Friday, police said the charge was upgraded to second-degree murder following consultations with public prosecutions.
“The previously laid manslaughter charge will be withdrawn at her next court appearance,” the RCMP said in a statement.
“That appearance is scheduled to take place in Melfort Provincial Court on June 26, 2025.”
