It’s business as usual for 9 Mile Legacy Brewing in Saskatoon following a fire behind the business over the May Long Weekend.
According to Shawn Moen, the brewery’s CEO and co-founder, the fire was started behind the 21st Street building on Saturday at around 3 a.m.
“Our understanding is that someone had lit a pallet on fire right beside our natural gas supply line and underneath our electrical meter, so the location was pretty problematic,” Moen said.
“The fire department attended promptly and saved the building from extensive damage.”

Moen said if it wasn’t for a community member who saw the fire and quickly called 911, the story might not have such a happy ending.
“There is somebody out there who was watching out for us, and we’re just very grateful that everything happened the way it did,” he said.
Moen said he hopes the person who called 911 will come down to the brewery for a “thank-you beer.”
“I will do it on the honour system, so if I get 50 people showing up saying they called 911, I’m gonna smell that one out,” he said with a laugh.
Moen said a number of people came together to help save his business.
“We’re very thankful to the Saskatoon Fire Department for responding so quickly, (and) to our landlords Richard and Laura Scrivener who were there for us in terms of support during the incident, but also maintaining a great building,” he said.
He also commended his electrician, Scott Adams, who was “Johnny on the spot” first thing that morning. With the help of Saskatoon Light and Power, the building’s electricity was quickly restored.
“This means any beer that was fermenting was saved,” he said. “So really we had a minor blip on the radar, and may it ever be so.”

As a business owner downtown, Moen said there’s only so much he can control.
“Unfortunately, there are things that happen in a city, and you can’t always control third parties. But what you can control is keeping your site clean,” Moen said.
“This was a good reminder that even though a pallet might feel a little innocuous, to make sure things are tidy.”
In a news release, the Saskatoon Fire Department said the incident was called in just after 3 a.m. Saturday.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke and flames on the exterior of the building.
One group of firefighters quickly sorted out the exterior fire while another crew entered the building to search for any additional flames. The building was also ventilated to clear any smoke.
No injuries were reported.
A fire investigator was also called to the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire and make a damage estimate.
The Saskatoon Police Service said the fire was determined to be a case of arson, but at this time there are no witnesses or suspects, and police do not have any video evidence showing the perpetrator.
