“When officers arrived, the adult male fled from the residence on foot. Officers followed the adult male on foot to the backyard of the residence and placed him under arrest,” the Saskatchewan RCMP said in a statement.
“Immediately after his arrest, the adult male went into medical distress in the backyard. Officers immediately called EMS, administered naloxone multiple times, and provided CPR until EMS arrived.”
The 29-year-old man was declared dead at the scene by paramedics, police said, and his family has been notified.
The RCMP said it alerted the Serious Incident Response Team about the death, as required by law. The team is a civilian-led organization that investigates cases in Saskatchewan where a person is seriously injured or dies while in police custody or as the result of a police officer’s actions.
“The Saskatchewan RCMP is disclosing this as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency,” the Mounties added.
The James Smith Cree Nation is located about 60 kilometres east of Prince Albert.
