On the campaign trail on Thursday, the Saskatchewan Party promised to make changes to legislation giving police more power to deal with nuisances and loitering.
In an online video, leader Scott Moe talked about his party’s commitment to dealing with crime and the safety of communities across the province.
Moe promised to make changes to The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act and other related legislation.
The changes would give police officers more authority to do things like deal with public nuisances and shut down nuisance properties like abandoned buildings that keep getting broken into or have people squatting inside them.
The Sask. Party said its government would also give police more authority to address intoxication on public property, vandalism and people “behaving in a disruptive manner on public property.”
In the video, Moe also touted what the Sask. Party government has already done on the crime front, adding funding for more municipal and RCMP officers as well as police enforcement teams, creating the Saskatchewan Marshals Service, and working to add more addictions treatment spaces around the province.
“Some areas of our province are seeing higher crime rates, and that’s almost always due to the scourge of illegal drugs and addictions. I’m disgusted by those who are destroying people’s lives by providing this poison,” said Moe in the social media video.
Moe is expected to announce the plan and new promises in person in Prince Albert on Thursday morning.
