A sea of blue shirts gathered around a memorial on 33 Street West on Sunday for the third annual Baeleigh Memorial Walk and Feast.
On September 9, 2021, nine-year-old Baeleigh Maurice was on her way to school when she was struck and killed by an allegedly impaired driver while crossing the street on her scooter.
Rhane Mahingen, Maurice’s aunt, said she wants the community to remember the joy her niece brought.

“Baeleigh had a lot of friends and she touched the hearts of a lot of teachers within Mayfair school,” Mahingen said. “She was known a lot for her smile.”
Since Maurice’s death, pedestrian safety improvements have been installed in the crosswalk.
“It was important for us to get this crosswalk up, because children cross here every day, especially on their way to Mayfair school, and never have I seen people stop for children until this crosswalk was put here.” explained Mahingen.
Mahingen said the support from the community has been overwhelming.

“The support they bring, not only to the crosswalk or keeping her little memorial maintained, but just checking in on our family and providing help with the feast, is important,” said Mahingen.
“It shows us how much she was loved and how much she touched our community.”
The woman who allegedly struck Maurice, Taylor Ashley Kennedy, has been charged with impaired driving causing death. Her trial remains before the courts.
