Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Highways announced on Canada Day that the Riverhurst ferry is back up and running after it had one of its engines repaired.
Just last week, the province released a statement saying there was no firm timeline for when the vessel would be up and running again after both the ferry’s primary engine and its backup engine had unforeseen issues and needed to be repaired so it could be put back into service for the 2024 season.

In the same statement from the province, it also said the current engines used on the vessel were manufactured in the early 1980s and had become more difficult to service and maintain.
The ferry is an essential route for people in that community trying to get from one side of Highway 42 to the other.
Because the ferry was stalled, many people in that area had to drive around the lake to get to the other side – which increased drive times for people from a matter of minutes to over an hour or more.
