The crashed car campaign put on by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has returned for the summer in Saskatoon.
The smashed-up vehicle is designed to grab a person’s attention as they drive by.
Bonny Stevenson, president of MADD Saskatoon, said more still has to be done on impaired driving.
“Craig (Stevenson) and I actually do a fair amount of speaking and we talk to drivers’ ed classes,” she said. “I think we get a really good impact there, but there’s just so many spots where they can hear that message.”
Stevenson said nowadays it is really important to make sure people understand the driving laws surrounding cannabis use.
“It is basically a zero tolerance law,” she explained. “Any trace that’s found, it’s a suspension, and we still see far too many people who are shocked when they hear that.”
Stevenson also said if you are going out with a group of friends it’s important to sit down with them and plan out the night.
“You plan who is the driver for the night, if, for some reason, something changes — and it can happen … you can always call mom or dad,” she said. “They may not be real happy getting woken up at three in the morning at the time, but I can guarantee that they’ll be a whole lot happier than if they have an officer standing at their front step at 6:30 in the morning telling them that their son or daughter is deceased.”
This year’s car will move across six locations throughout the summer.
- June 12 to 25 at Berini Drive and Attridge Drive
- June 26 to July 9 at Zimmerman Road and Patience Lake Road
- July 10 to July 23 at Valley Road near the Landfill access
- July 24 to Aug. 6 at 51st Street and Warman Road
- Aug. 7 to Aug. 20 at Diefenbaker Drive and 22nd Street
- Aug. 21 to Sept. 10 on Voyageur Crescent at the University of Saskatchewan
The crashed car campaign is also underway in Prince Albert.
