One week after two information sessions on the proposed new Sutherland 30-bed emergency shelter were cancelled by the City of Saskatoon, the meetings have been rescheduled.
Although exact times and locations haven’t been confirmed yet, a virtual information session will take place on March 11, and an in-person session will go ahead on March 12.
According to a statement, the city will have more information in the upcoming week. Businesses and residents within 500 metres of the new shelter will also be directly notified.
During the sessions, feedback will be requested on the best ways to integrate a new shelter into the neighbourhood, along with what expectations are of the city, province and The Mustard Seed, the organization that will run the facility.
The city says its representatives will also talk about the need for shelters in the city, and general information on shelter operations, along with other topics.
While no explanation was offered on why the initial sessions were cancelled, a statement did thank the community for its patience “in allowing all the various organizations the necessary time to complete the work on the integrated operating plan.”
Parents of students attending Bishop Filevich Ukrainian Bilingual School — which is located less than 100 metres from the shelter — have raised concerns about the location of the shelter, as have the Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association and residents of the area.
Ward 1 Coun. Darren Hill said earlier this week that several city approvals are still needed before the shelter can open its doors, including a public hearing to rezone the facility.
The statement from the city indicated that it’s working collaboratively with the province on the final details to prepare for the shelter to open at the former Sutherland Fire Station No. 5.
