The ice on recreational ponds in Saskatoon is now thick enough for skaters.
That information comes after ice thickness testing from the Fire Department at stormwater retention ponds around Saskatoon, the city said in a release.
According to the city, ice must be at least eight inches thick to be considered safe to skate on and only certain stormwater ponds are designated for recreational use.
Signage has been updated for each pond, and signs with a green “Skating Permitted” indicate ponds where the ice is safe. The city is reminding skaters to read the signs before using the pond.
“Community members who use the ponds for recreational purposes assume all risk and maintenance responsibilities for the ice including shoveling, flooding, as well as user safety,” the release said.
