One man has died and an RCMP officer was injured after an incident on the Red Earth Cree Nation early Tuesday.
Mounties were called to the community around 3:40 a.m. for reports of a gun being fired.
Police found and apprehended two people allegedly involved in the incident and attempted to arrest a third suspect, a 25-year-old man.
Police said the man opened fire at RCMP vehicles and an exchange of gunfire ensued.
The suspect and an RCMP officer both sustained injuries as a result.
The suspect was later declared dead by paramedics, while the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
His identity has not been released, and no charges have been laid at this time.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating the RCMP’s interaction with the deceased and the circumstances of his death.
The Cree Nation is located 80 kilometres east of Nipawin.
