A Saskatoon hospital will be feeling a lot of joy this Christmas.
The St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation raised $270,000 for new technology at the hospital through its 34th annual Mistletoe Ball and the sale of mistletoe baskets packed with locally made products.
The funding will go towards the purchase of a BK ultrasound system and anesthesia machine, which will be used alongside the facility’s da Vinci surgical robot. The robot has been in use since September of 2022, and performed more than 200 surgeries in its first year at the hospital.
“This phenomenal support will help to expand the capabilities of ‘Daryl,’ our Surgical Robot, even further,” Lecina Hicke, the foundation’s CEO, said in a statement.
The foundation said the new ultrasound machine will provide real-time images of kidney tumours during procedures, which will improve patient outcomes.
The anesthesia machine will include the latest in ventilator technology and monitoring equipment, which will enable a higher level of care in some complex cases.
“We are so grateful to our dedicated presenting sponsor, Nutrien, whose longstanding support of this unique annual event has brought innovation to our Hospital and community,” Hicke added.
The foundation also thanked the team whose hard work made the event – and the fundraising – possible.
Such a cool experience seeing the Da Vinci surgery robot up close. Huge thanks to the staff at St. Paul’s Hospital and the @SaskHealth for allowing me to come see the robot. #YXE #Robot pic.twitter.com/MpKKgQNfmb
