A memorial for a nine-year-old girl who was hit by a truck and killed in 2021 caught fire on Saturday.
The memorial for Baeleigh Emily Maurice has been standing for two years along 33rd Street West in Saskatoon near the site where Maurice was hit by a pickup truck while riding her scooter to school on Sept. 9, 2021.
According to the City of Saskatoon, firefighters were called to the memorial early in the morning after the flame from an unattended candle spread to a tree. The fire was already extinguished when firefighters arrived, but they soaked the area down further with water.
Taylor Ashley Kennedy is accused of driving while impaired by THC, causing Maurice’s death. Kennedy’s trial is expected to continue in February.
In addition to the memorial, Maurice’s family keeps Baeleigh’s memory alive through an annual memorial walk in September.
