The holiday season can be a tough time of year for many Saskatoon families, as buying gifts and a festive meal isn’t something everyone can afford.
650 CKOM and Rock 102 launched the 36th annual Adopt-A-Family program on Monday. Donors are matched to Saskatoon families through The Salvation Army, then the donors shop for gifts and groceries to support their family and help make their holiday season special.
The program first started back in 1988, and collected $5,000 in its first year. Demand for help in the community has grown immensely since that time, and Adopt-A-Family has grown as well. Last year’s campaign raised more than $93,000 in cash, food and gifts, helping hundreds of families and thousands of children have a special Christmas.
Lieutenant Angela Kerr, who oversees the program and works with volunteers, said it’s an important annual tradition that really helps those in need.
“In 2022, over 3,700 families received assistance during the Christmas Season,” Kerr explained in a statement.
“Our goal is to support as many families as possible, and the gifts and monetary donations that sponsor families provide goes a long way to making sure everyone has a very Merry Christmas.”
Donors can register to be matched with a family until Dec. 3 on 650 CKOM and Rock 102’s websites. Monetary donations are also accepted, and are used to support even more families.
