Lasas was last seen alive on Sept. 24, 2006 at about 10:30 p.m., when she left a friend’s house in the 600 block of Avenue H South. She told her friend she was planning to walk to a family member’s house on 28th Street.
Lasas’ family called police after she failed to pick up a government cheque and missed regular calls with her children.
She was described in a police release from the time as being 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds with auburn hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing grey jeans, a black jacket and a white headband.
Human remains were found June 30, 2007 in the 200 block of 33rd Street West, and on July 19 of that year, police announced the remains had been identified as those of Lasas.
“Marie Lasas’ death is being considered a homicide and investigators are continuing to follow any leads that may have been developed as part of the missing person investigation,” police said in that release.
The case is still open and no suspects have been identified, but police said investigators think members of the public have information that could help solve the case.
Anyone with details is asked to call police at 306-975-8300 or submit a tip anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Police probing shooting, stabbing
Saskatoon police are investigating a shooting and a stabbing, both of which occurred on the weekend.
Police say they got a call about the shooting Saturday at around 2:30 a.m. They were told about an injured person at a home in the 100 block of Avenue I North, where they found a 17-year-old boy who had suffered a non-life-threatening injury.
The victim told officers he and two friends had been walking on Bedford Road between avenues H and I when they were approached by two men who spoke to them and then began shooting. The suspects ran off; no description was provided by police.
Then, on Sunday at about 12:45 a.m., officers were called to a business in the 1500 block of Eighth Street East, where they found a 26-year-old man who had been stabbed.
“He reported that he had approached a group of people in the alley of the 1600 block of Main Street,” police said in a release. “A man and a woman demanded cigarettes and then began stabbing him. He was able to walk to the business for assistance.”
The victim said the man was 5-foot-10 with shoulder-length black hair and a beard. He was wearing black pants, a black shirt and a blue vest. The victim described the woman as being 5-foot-8 with long straight black hair. She was carrying a yellow object.
Anyone with information about either incident was asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
