Despite a delay that caused a sizable jam during rush hour on Thursday morning, the northbound lanes on Idylwyld Drive at Saskatchewan Crescent West are once again open to traffic.
According to the city, repair work on the Senator Sid Buckwold Bridge was expected to be completed overnight “with a planned reopening of 7 a.m. to minimize the traffic impact and avoid the morning commute,” but the contractor ran into equipment issues, delaying the opening and causing a jam.
“The equipment has been repaired, and the bridge work is now complete,” a city spokesperson said in a statement.
The statement acknowledged that the delay did cause headaches for many morning commuters, and the city thanked drivers for their patience and understanding.
The span recently underwent a two-year, $20-million rehabilitation project, which wrapped up in 2020.
Another project on the landmark bridge removed about 348 metric tonnes of pigeon poop from the utility cavities under the bridge.
More information on current construction projects can be found on the city’s website.
