A 63-year-old man from Martensville has pleaded guilty to one count of common assault in the wake of an altercation in the SaskTel Centre parking lot on April 2.
According to Saskatoon Provincial Court documents, Donald J. Hamoline pleaded guilty to the charge on Thursday.
The incident, which involved two parking lot attendants, occurred after a WHL playoff game between the Saskatoon Blades and Regina Pats.
The incident was captured on video and widely shared. More than a week after the video was taken, Hamoline turned himself in to Saskatoon police.
A statement from Hamoline’s lawyer, Sharon Fox, said the outcome was the correct result in the circumstance.
“My client deeply regrets his actions that day. The SaskTel (Centre) employees were not without fault, but my client recognizes that despite the provocation and misguided actions of the parking attendants, he should have conducted himself in a more appropriate manner,” she wrote.
In the statement, Fox also said the judge recognized that it was an assault at the “lower end” of the spectrum, and that Hamoline voluntarily completed a six-week-long anger management course, and offered an apology in open court to the SaskTel Centre employees.
In a joint Crown and defence submission, Hamoline was given a 12-month conditional discharge during which he must complete 50 hours of community service and prepare a written apology to the SaskTel Centre employees.
