Saskatoon police have identified the victim of the city’s eighth murder of 2023.
The name of 33-year-old Melissa Bear was released Wednesday afternoon after her next of kin was notified of her death.
Police didn’t release any more details about Bear’s murder, including how she was killed.
Earlier Wednesday, police said officers responded at approximately 10:20 p.m., to a house in the 1100 block of St. Paul’s Place for a report of an injured woman.
Officers located the woman, who was taken to hospital. She died a short time later.
Amanda Glenn lives four houses down from where the murder took place and said it was a chaotic scene as several police officers and first responders rushed to the scene.
Glenn noted that unfortunately, lots of incidents tend to happen in that area of town.
“It’s ghetto around here — very ghetto,” Glenn said. “(The house where the murder happened) is like a trap house — a trap house with kids (in it).
“There’s always commotion around here. The little kids around here always light these trees on fire. The cops are well-known here; they’re like best friends,” she joked.
Glenn said once she gets enough money to get out of the area, she’ll leave.
“As soon as I can get income, I am out of here,” she said. “It’s too scary. My daughter got hit by a car over here. It’s a dangerous area.”
Anyone with information about Bear’s murder is asked to contact the police at 306-975-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
