The 34-year-old man accused of killing Misha Pavelick made his third court appearance Monday.
The man was charged with second-degree murder on June 24 after a 17-year investigation by the RCMP. Pavelick was 19 when he was stabbed to death at a high school party near Regina Beach on May 21, 2006.
The accused stood out in Regina Youth Court on Monday as he’s much older than others in the court. He wore a white sweater with his hat in the hood, along with black pants and sneakers. He stood with his hands in his pockets and told the court he still did not have a lawyer.
The man’s second appearance was also adjourned because he didn’t have a lawyer. On Monday, he explained to the court that he was trying to figure out how to pay for a lawyer. He asked for the case to be adjourned until October.
The judge explained they could not push back matters for much longer, and encouraged the man to apply for Legal Aid. The man’s next court appearance was scheduled for Sept. 14 at 9:30 a.m. in Youth Court.
Lorne Pavelick, Misha’s father, was in attendance for the appearance with family and friends. The elder Pavelick declined to speak to reporters.
The name of the accused can’t be published under terms of the Youth Criminal Justice Act as he was a youth at the time of the killing.
During a media conference when the charges were announced, the RCMP didn’t share a motive for the stabbing.
