The City of Saskatoon is one step closer to renaming John A. Macdonald Road.
On Tuesday, the city’s Civic Naming Committee unanimously approved two recommendations that will explore changing the name of John A. Macdonald Road to miyo-wâhkôhtowin Road — loosely translated from Cree as meaning “good relationships.”
Along with the recommendation to change the name, the city’s solicitor’s office has been directed to prepare an appropriate bylaw for the street name change.
Five members of the public who were mainly from that area spoke at the committee meeting in support of the change. Some who spoke said they supported a name change, but didn’t want it to be called miyo-wâhkôhtowin Road.
Another man who spoke didn’t support the name change and suggested the removal of the name of Canada’s first prime minister would erase part of Canada’s history.
The decision by the Civic Naming Committee will now go to the next Planning Development Committee meeting scheduled for Aug. 9 for further discussion. Should the same recommendations be approved by that committee, it will then be debated by city council.
