Two men are facing manslaughter charges after the death of a 38-year-old man.
One of the men is in custody, and the RCMP is asking the public to keep an eye out for the second.
According to police, 38-year-old Teddy Whitehead of the Pelican Lake First Nation was killed on the Witchekan Lake First Nation on July 15. At the time, police said they believed Whitehead was assaulted, and on Wednesday the RCMP said police could now confirm Whitehead was the victim of homicide.
The RCMP said 35-year-old Chase Cardinal from Vilna, Alta., was arrested Wednesday morning in Spiritwood, and is expected to appear in court in North Battleford on Wednesday on a manslaughter charge.
Police asked the public to report any sightings of the other man facing a manslaughter charge in the case, 32-year-old Nathaniel Sakebow from the Witchekan Lake First Nation. Sakebow stands 5-foot-8, police said, and weighs 235 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information on Sakebow’s whereabouts was urged to contact the RCMP or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.
In May of 2026, Sakebow pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death for his role in the death of Whitehead. Sakebow also pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm in an unrelated incident on the First Nation.
For both incidents, Sakebow was sentenced to five years in prison, with just over a year and a half credited for time already served.
