Athletes representing Saskatchewan at the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) in Halifax are being honoured.
Recognition for the athletes was given at Dakota Dunes.
Many of the athletes are excited to be able to perform at a national level event while representing their province.
“I’ve never been to NAIG before so it’s very exciting,” said Dade Bernatchez, a golfer with Team Saskatchewan
This isn’t Bernatchez’s first time golfing in a competitive environment, however.
“I’ve been golfing competitively for about five years now,” Bernatchez said.
Bernatchez said he’s competed in the Maple Leaf Junior Tournament and that has helped prepare him for this event.
Abby Du Plessis, member of Team Saskatchewan’s soccer team, said she’s excited for this opportunity.
“It’s a really good opportunity and I’m excited to be there with everybody,” Du Plessis said.
Du Plessis thinks playing against the other provinces is the most exciting part of the event.
It’s her first tournament competing at a national level.
The NAIG Games conclude on July 23.
