A crash involving a five-ton truck and a cargo van on Highway 16 left one person dead and two others in hospital.
According to the RCMP, the two-vehicle collision happened west of Plunkett on Wednesday afternoon, when a westbound truck collided with a van. Preliminary information shared by RCMP on Wednesday identified the five-ton truck as a semi, but at the time police noted that the information may be subject to change.
Police said the driver and only occupant of the truck – a 40-year-old man from Yorkton – was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. His family has been notified, the RCMP said.
Both occupants of the cargo van were taken to hospital, police added. The passenger has since been released, but the driver remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
While Highway 16 was blocked in both directions in the aftermath of the crash and investigation, the traffic restrictions were removed Wednesday evening.
“Saskatoon RCMP continues to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service,” the Mounties said in a release.
