An incident that involved police officers shooting at a suspect played out in Regina’s Core neighbourhood Saturday.
According to police, the situation began with officers responding to the intersection of Victoria Avenue and St. John Street just after 5 a.m., for a call about an injured woman laying in the street. When the officers arrived, they found the woman had been stabbed.
A police media release said the situation escalated after officers found the suspect in a truck parked nearby.
“As officers approached the vehicle, the suspect backed up at a high rate of speed and ran over the female victim,” the release said. “Officers ordered the suspect to stop and exit the vehicle. The suspect refused and began to drive at a high rate of speed towards officers and the victim. In an attempt to stop the driver, officers discharged their firearms.
“No injuries occurred as a result of the discharge and the driver ran over the victim a second time at a high rate of speed before fleeing the area.”
Officers followed the suspect and arrested him in a rural location northeast of Regina.
The woman was taken to hospital by paramedics. The release didn’t provide her condition.
The suspect, 54-year-old Tony Hudson, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, and one count each of operating a conveyance dangerous to the public, flight from a peace officer, and failure to stop after an accident that results in bodily harm. He’s to appear in court Monday.
The release said the Regina Police Service will review the officers’ decision to fire their guns and to pursue the suspect vehicle. As well, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team will monitor the reviews, and the uses of force will be reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
