The faces of kids from Chief Whitecap School lit up Tuesday as they saw their artwork proudly displayed on the side of Saskatoon buses.
Saskatoon Transit hosted an art contest for elementary school students to showcase their artistic side. The winners’ artwork is being shown off on the side of buses throughout Saskatoon this summer.
This year, the winners were from the Grade 5 classroom at Chief Whitecap School.
“This is such an artistic group of kids. We’ve done a lot of different artworks, more so than I have with any other classes,” said teacher Kendra Toor. “Their creativity and minds are just remarkable.”
Students Amina and Hanna were specifically selected as this year’s best of show winners for the creativity their artwork displayed.
The winning pieces were chosen in collaboration with the Remai Modern Art Gallery with the theme of active transportation.
“I know that they’ll remember this for such a long time,” said Toor. “I’m really proud of them and happy that we won.”
Saskatoon Public Schools said that through its “Move to Grow” initiative, it’s encouraging various modes of transportation that are better for the Earth, mind and body.
Saskatoon Transit said it’s excited for the opportunity to show off the artwork of students in the city and have them learn more about the transit system.
“I think it’s a great conversation piece. It lets us talk about our students who are a part of our community,” said Cory Shrigley, the customer support and engagement manager of Saskatoon Transit.
“When I see the art, it inspires me, so I’m very hopeful that it will do the same for others.”
The art will be displayed on 10 different buses travelling across many routes, giving the whole city a chance to see it.
