Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Thursday morning for areas of western Saskatchewan, suggesting funnel clouds could develop in the afternoon.
The statement was issued for areas around Meadow Lake, Big River, Green Lake, Pierceland, The Battlefords, Unity, Maidstone and St. Walburg.
“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,” the advisory said. “This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”
Environment Canada said if tornadoes form, it would issue watches or warnings.
